Expert Reviews

“They’re not cheap, but these are the most complete, high-tech waterproof headphones on the market. The sound is bone-conducted from beside your ear, preventing the risk of swimmer’s ear and other potential plugged-ear problems.”
“Perfect for swimmers in particular, the Aftershokz Xtranierz are an appealing set of bone-conducting headphones. We just wish they had Bluetooth connectivity for those out of the pool times.”
" Sound is incredible underwater thanks to a dedicated swimming EQ, with the bone-conduction pads sitting on your cheekbones and the ear-hook design resting comfortably under a hat or goggles. "

Great swimming headphones

In common with another reviewer, I used Sony Waterproof earphones to stave off the boredom of swimming! However, when they eventually broke, I tried the Xtrainerz. Pre lock-down I was swimming 30 minutes a day in a 20M pool.

By comparison, the Xtrainerz go longer between recharging c/w the Sony's. They are also very lightweight - you dont really know you have them on. They are however more expensive than a Sony. They also feel more flimsy than the Sony, although I haven't put the titanium to the test: with careful handling, they are probably OK.

Another reviewer makes the point that sound quality differs whether or not you are above water. I imagine that when you are submerged, you are probably increasing the amount of bone conduction(BC)? They are louder underwater, but to be honest, they are loud enough above water (and they are louder than the Sony). Yes, you can use earplugs to smooth out the difference in sound, but the real attraction of these is that you dont need to have anything stuck in your ears!

Sound quality is fine, although BC tends to favour lower frequencies, so they can sound a bit 'bassy', but again I dont think this is a problem. Music while you swim isn't a hi-fi experience, so for me they are fit for purpose.

Hope this helps and good luck with your swimming journey. Andrew

Broken within a year

Purchased these and they worked well sound is OK and overall a better solution to many I've tried when swimming. Used about twenty times until the recent lockdown. Gone to use them again and one side is not producing sound anymore. Filled out the warrenty so will see what happens with that. However it's not looking promising when the drop down menu for problems with these has my issue already to pick. Seems like a well known problem that's making me wonder if I should invest in the aeropex

Xtrainerz - excellent piece of kit

Plug in, drag and drop, hook on and press go! As well as great audio clarity and style this piece of kit is so simple to use it’s a dream (I had one of the original Sony swim MP3 players and after 12 years still can’t use it!). I am so impressed I’ve taken the time to give a review!

Great headphones

Bought these initially to get through the boredom factor or swimming. Once in the water and my ear plugs in can go for hours listening. Use them on the bike and out running as you can still hear the world around you. Had one tiny issue with them and support took care of me the next day. Great product and well worth the tiny inconvenience of having to push the files on it.

Ok, but not great - MP3 difficult to sync, and change in sound in and out of water

I like these but they're not perfect. Although not Aftershox fault they don't sync with my 2 most used audio software (I know I should have checked more carefully - both both say you can download just not as MP3 or to these headphones!) they are Audible, and Spotify.
Also I find that when swimming breast stroke for example, on bringing your head out the water and then back in there's a big change in audio quality (so frontcrawl the whole time and they're great!) otherwise the sound quality is mixed - I think you're meant to use the ear plugs but then why wouldn't I just get a pair of ear in headphones?
Anyway given the substantial price tag, I'm not convinced I'd buy these again.

①IPX8 : This rating applies to items that are protected against effects of continuous immersion in water.
Test conditions:
1. Ensured that the appearance and function of the testing sample (Xtrainerz) was normal.
2. Xtrainerz was placed into the designated immersion tank.
3. Water was added to reach the standard 1m level line in the water tank, and a pressure of 0.1 atm was added.
4. Test time was 2 hours.
After testing, Xtrainerz functioned normally after being immersed in water of 2-meter depth for 2 hours.
IP6X: This rating applies to items that are protected against ingress of dust. Ingress of dust is not totally prevented.
Test conditions:
Xtrainerz was placed in a sealed box with a certain density of dust particles about 75 μm in diameter, and pumped under a negative pressure of 2Kpa for 8 hours.
Xtrainerz functions normally after the test.
②This data was the result of a test that was conducted using Xtrainerz.
Test conditions: Copied the audio file (white noise with 44.1kHz sampling rate and 24bit bit depth in wav format) to the Xtrainerz headphones, adjusted to the standard EQ mode, and set the volume by pressing “Volume- “button four times from the maximum volume in a normal temperature environment.
Test content: Xtrainerz battery was fully discharged and then charged to 100%. The audio file was played until the headphones stopped playback. The duration time was counted as the continuous playback time of the headphones.
Test result: It showed that the Xtrainerz had a continuous playback time of up to 8 hours.
In actual use, battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage, and many other factors.
